A Free Microsoft Word Alternative
WordCraft gives you the Word workflow you already know — the ribbon, styles, tables and track changes — for free. Use it online without an account, or install it on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Why People Switch to WordCraft
A free Word alternative is useful when it completes the task you actually have: changing a sentence, updating a résumé or preparing a letter. Start with a duplicate of your document. Check that you can open it, make the required change, download a DOCX copy and reopen the result before deciding to use a new editor for more work.
- Free and open source: no subscription and no trial that runs out.
- Familiar: Word-style ribbon tabs, Styles gallery and keyboard shortcuts.
- Real .docx files: open, edit and save documents that open in Word.
- Private: the online editor runs in your browser and files stay on your device.
- Everywhere: browser, Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD.
Who It Is For
For an assignment, follow the required file format and review the saved copy before submitting it. For a job application, check page breaks and remove all template placeholders. On a shared computer, follow its account and download policies, save your work to a location you control and close the document when you finish.
- Students who need to write and submit .docx assignments.
- Job seekers editing a résumé or cover letter.
- Linux and Chromebook users who cannot install Word.
- Anyone who needs to fix one document quickly on a borrowed computer.
How It Compares With Other Free Options
Google Docs can edit Office files directly and save changes in the original format after the files are uploaded to Google Drive. Converting to the Google Docs format is a separate option. It offers a cloud collaboration workflow; the document handling differs from opening a local file in our browser editor.
LibreOffice Writer is a free desktop word processor. Word for the web is also available free through the standard Microsoft account workflow. A paid Microsoft desktop subscription is not required merely to use the free web apps. Compare the actual edition and workflow you need rather than treating every version of Word as paid.
WordCraft focuses on a familiar ribbon and local DOCX editing, with a browser workspace that needs no sign-in. It is newer and still in alpha. A free price does not guarantee exact formatting, and there is no real-time co-editing in this service. Choose another option when collaboration or a complex document matters more than a local, account-free edit.
Free Word Alternative FAQ
Is WordCraft really free?
Yes. Editing is free, and the software is open source. Optional AI features may be offered later as a paid extra.
Does it work offline?
The desktop app works fully offline. The online editor needs a connection to load, then edits locally in your browser.
What are the limits?
There is no real-time collaboration yet, and charts or SmartArt may not survive a round trip.
How do I check a free DOCX editor before switching?
Use a backup copy of a real document. Make a small edit, save a new DOCX file and reopen it. Review text, tables, pictures and page breaks. Keep the original if the result changes unexpectedly; a simple test document is a starting point, not proof of complete compatibility.
Does a free Word alternative need to store my documents online?
Different tools use different workflows. This editor reads a file you select on your device and saves an edited copy as a download. Our optional account does not add cloud document storage. Other services may use their own cloud storage, so check their file handling before uploading a document.
